Biography:
Over 70 per cent of machinery parts and load-bearing components undergo premature failure. With so many lives on the line daily – people in cars, in aircrafts and in hospitals – reliability of mechanical devices is of the utmost importance. For Ahmad Varvani-Farahani, failure is not an option. Following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, Varvani was motivated to advance the reliability of machines and space vehicles through his education in mechanical engineering.
Today, he is ambitious to upgrade quality of life in society through design of risk-free and durable devices. Varvani’s focus is to broadly develop models and theories on damage assessment and failure of materials. This ensures performance and structural integrity of vehicles, airplanes and diagnostic health-care equipment, making society safer today than it was yesterday. Research outcomes and innovative ideas developed within his group have helped to solve several challenging engineering problems and benefited society and industry with durable parts and structures. “We assess the magnitude of damage caused by dynamic loads in automotive, aviation and medical fields. That’s how we protect lives.”

Professor Dr. Zainuriah Hassan, FASc area of expertise is wide band gap semiconductors and devices. In 1979, she was awarded the Gold Medal by the Sultan of Kedah for the best performance in the Malaysia Certificate of Education examination. She received the B.Sc (Magna Cum Laude) degree and the Master’s degree in Physics from Western Michigan University, USA in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and the Ph.D degree in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from Ohio University, USA in 1998, and was a Research Associate there from 1997 to 1998. She started her Ph.D work at Ohio University in 1994, and in 1996, they were successful in getting a research grant of USD 2 million. During her studies at Ohio University, she was an important member of the wide band gap semiconductor effort. She pioneered many of the scientific advances that would be the center of the nitride work at Ohio University. She was instrumental in the installation and operation of the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor; and she was the first to grow GaN and AlN at Ohio University. She started her work as a Lecturer at the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in September 1998. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004, Associate Professor in 2007, and Full Professor, VK7, VK6 and VK5 (Special Grade A) in 2009, 2015 and 2020, respectively. She is currently an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Nano Optoelectronics Research and Technology (INOR), USM and was the Director of INOR in 2016 and 2018-2021.
